âThe Gordons had the nerve to walk onto my territory in broad daylight?â Toniâs angry, husky voice hissed through Jamieâs car. âHow fucking dare they?â
âThey want me to fight Patrick Gordon in a bare-knuckle match tomorrow night,â he told her. âAnd I said yes.â
âWhy the hell did you do that?â
âBecause the Lawsons were there when they turned up. If Iâd said no it would have ruined my reputation.â
âAll right, I suppose I can understand that; after all, itâs your reputation that keeps the Gallowburn peaceful.â
âIâm on my way to speak to my krav maga instructor. He already knows about these fights at Cowcaddens.â
âGood, Iâm glad youâve got someone who can advise you, and let me set the fight up. Hopefully all the Gordons will turn up to watch and we can end this once and for all.â
Jamie didnât dare ask Toni if she was planning a massacre. He wasnât too proud to admit that the thought scared him, even though he knew that might be the only way to stop the Gordons from ousting the McVays.
'Thereâs something else â the Lawsons are definitely up to something, probably on Craigâs orders. Theyâve been acting really shifty, more so than usual.â Jamie explained.
âAnd what do you plan to do about it?â
âGet hold of John Lawson and make him tell us whatâs going on.â
âGood plan, I like it. Simple but effective. Iâm sure you can handle a runt like him.â
âAbsolutely.â
âGood boy.â
âI wanted to ask â has there been any sighting of my daâ?â
Toniâs voice took on a surprisingly gentle tone. âNo Jamie, Iâm afraid not. Maybe he skipped abroad? Or maybe someone finally put him out of his misery?â
âItâs just that Iâm worried he might get wind that the Gordons are after bringing you down and that he might help them because he knows itâs the only way to save his own skin.â
âThatâs a good point, but he would be really stupid to go anywhere near this and one thing Jason Gray isnât is stupid. However, weâll stay alert. Iâve still got people out looking for him. I have contacts all over this city, so if he pops up, he will be spotted. Right, we have enough going on with the Thompsons, Gordons, and the Lawsons. You need to concentrate on your training so you can turn Patrick Gordon into cheap pâté in the ring tomorrow. At least at Cowcaddens they have someone who will stop the fight if it gets too rough, so thereâs no danger of anyone getting killed. I remember the good old days when bare-knuckle fighting was illegal and you could get away with anything.â She sighed wistfully. âI saw many a fighter on the floor with blood coming out of their ears or with their eyeballs hanging out of their heads on the optic nerve. Happy days.â
Jamie wondered if that was what had made her start her collection of eyeballs. âIâve got to go,â he said, anxious to end the call before it became too graphic. âIâm nearly at my instructorâs house.
